Small family seeking mentoring/creative solution: 2+ acres in Northwestern Oregon

Land Seeker Description

We are a couple, Andrew and Jen, in our early 30s with a 4 year-old son. We’ve been together for 18 years and have gone through an array of jobs, education, and experiences both rewarding and challenging. For many years we have discussed wanting to learn to farm and work with the land. At the start of the pandemic, Andrew lost his job. The last year has changed our lives and given us perspective about where we want to go from here- working with the land, more time at home and with family and teaching our son the value of farming. Previous to the last year, we had struggled to find the right time to make this change and we feel that time is now.

We have grown many different varieties of herbs and vegetables in our own yard in the past and have some knowledge regarding animal care. We care deeply for animals. Jen has worked on a couple small farm projects in Forest Grove and assisted with the Farmer’s Market out there as well. Andrew has worked and volunteered on some small farms. We both have some knowledge regarding landscaping and upkeep of grounds.

Jen does have some physical challenges we want to be honest about. She has good days and bad with her chronic illness but she is very capable and driven and does the best she can, when she can. Andrew is dedicated and knowledgeable and loves to get his hands in the dirt. Our 4 year old son is a sweetheart and he loves to help! He is very good with animals and gentle.

We would love to chat with anyone that feels we may be a good match. We are not looking for any particular area but within an hour or so of Portland would be ideal as our son’s grandparents are there and he is very close to them.

Thank you and be well!

What features of the property are essential?

We don't have too many specific requests beyond available housing and we do not want to work on a farm that is using heavy pesticides and chemicals. If we were to be able to do some of our own projects on the property, having a small area where we can grow and manage some lavender to get our "feet wet" would be great.

Describe your farming experience

We have both done backyard farming as well as volunteer on large farms. We have assisted with planting, tilling, growing, harvesting, composting and more. We also have experience with woodworking, construction/maintenance, food processing and canning.

Are you currently farming?

What are your short term goals for the land

We would like to learn more about farm management and growing and harvesting various crops. Experience with animals would be welcome. Our goal is to have a lavender farm in the future.

What are your long term goals

We would like to have a 2-5 acre small u-pick lavender farm with an herb shop on site somewhere in the Willamette valley.

Describe your housing needs

We are hoping for a small to medium size house. We would like to be part of a community but have our own space. Because we have a small child, we do not feel a trailer is suitable.
