Seeking to Lease, Lease-To-Own, or a Creative Solution for Veggies and/or Livestock

Land Seeker Description

I’m looking for space to start my market garden. The space could be as little as a half acre or up to five or more. The scope of the farm enterprise can be adapted to any size as I’m interested in market gardening mostly annual vegetables and some perennial fruits for primarily restaurants and possible CSA subscription. If the property size is more towards the 5+ acres, I’d like to incorporate livestock (sheep, goats, chickens) as apart of the business and operations. I’m also very interested in make larger quantities of compost for personal use but also for sale.

I’ve spent the past couple years working on a small hobby farm just south of Corvallis Oregon. About 5 acres, 0.25 under cultivation for vegetable production, and the rest orchards, flower gardens, pasture, and mixed forest. It is relatively comparable to an intensive organic market garden, however, instead of for market produce we grow for subsistence and donate to local food banks. I’ve managed crop selection, rotation, production, harvest, cover cropping, and tested various soil management systems. I also have experience in construction/carpentry, driving tractors/forklifts, and mechanical experience from my time in the Navy. I’m hoping to take this experience and expand it to provide more of my community with delicious healthy food and to help support a sustainable/resilient community by relying less on shipped and out sourced food.

The pandemic really put this in perspective for me when everything was in short supply due to short comings in supply chain logistics, and hearing stories of farmers having to till in their crop or pour out their dairy because the supply chain stopped. I believe by creating strong local agriculture we can not only be resilient to these situations but also create more sustainable communities, as it starts from the local level not from waiting on top positions of the government. To reiterate, I’m not seeking any particular acreage but willing to adapt my scope with what is available!

What features of the property are essential?

Essentially just water rights, or on-site private well, and hopefully irrigation structures.

Describe your farming experience

2 years working/managing a not for profit farm which is organic but not certified. 0.25 acre under cultivation for vegetables using no till practices and tilling conservation. Year-round growing with a hoop house, and extensive use of cover cropping. The remaining of the 5 acres was fruit orchards, flowers, pasture, and a small section of forest.

Are you currently farming?

What are your short term goals for the land

The biggest short term goal is finding land maybe without partnership or hopefully with, as I feel more can be accomplished as a collective versus on our own. Investing in the land to improve or maintain quality of soil, and to better build and develop my market. My market being focused on local restaurants and growing a CSA subscription hopefully in collaboration with other farms.

What are your long term goals

Long term, I want to invest in soil quality (also a short term goal.. but does it ever really end?) through deep mulches, composting, and cover cropping. I also want to be part of or develop a community of shared interests or goals to help with resiliency and a collective success personally and/or professionally.

Describe your housing needs

Would prefer a place to stay on property but not a requirement. Beyond me is my girlfriend and our two dogs which would be part of the crew.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

Being a welcoming and kind individual, who encourages community and cooperation. This field can be very difficult in many ways, but it doesn't always have to be by creating safe and fun work environments and treating other farms as collaborators and not competitors.
