Seeking to lease about 5 acres around Portland

?

Land Seeker Description

I am seeking around 5 acres of land to start a pasture-raised protein business. I plan to start by growing out a small number of sheep, pigs, and chickens in my first year, and I hope to scale up to a having a meat CSA and breeding program by my third year. My long term goal is to have my own regenerative farm/ranch focused on silvopasture raised animals, but right now I’m really just looking for some pasture land to start getting real hands on experience managing animals in a leader-follower rotational grazing system. If we share similar or compatible long term goals, I am open to collaboration. If you are experienced in rotational grazing, I am open to being mentored. My over-arching goal is to be a part of creating a sustainable food system for the PNW that can stand up to the challenges of climate change.  I hope we can connect and build this together.

What features of the property are essential?

Access to water for the animals and pasture of some sort are the only two things I see as essential.

Describe your farming experience

My hands on farming experience has been limited by my access to land in the various places I have lived, but I have always made space for cultivation of some kind. At times, I have been lucky enough to have the space for raised beds, aquaculture systems, and even backyard ducks. Other times, I have been stuck with only a shelve of grow lights and pots of annual greens.

In the last few years, I have also spent most of my free time getting as much theoretical knowledge as I could. From visiting gardens and farms in different parts of the world, to reading many books on the various subjects that make up farming, I have done my best to be ready to be a responsible steward of the land.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land

My immediate goal for 2023 is to get on around five acers of land where I can raise a small number of sheep, pigs, and chickens in a leader-follower rotational grazing system until they reach butcher weight. This goal is all about getting in the routine of rotational grazing before adding more complexity to the system.

My short term goal beyond my first year with land access is to get a breeding program going for all three types of animals and establish a meat CSA to raise money for my own land.

What are your long term goals

My long term goal is to have my own small regenerative farm/ranch focused on establishing an ecologically sound silvopasture.

Beyond the long term, I would love to connect with others who are farming with regenerative practices in order to create a sustainable local food system.

Describe your housing needs

Currently, I live in an apartment with a lease, so housing is not on my list of priorities, but, if available, it is something I might be interested in.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

As someone who is just starting out, I am seeking advise and wisdom from all sources, and respectfully actively listening to those who know more than I do will hopefully make members from any community feel welcome to engage with me.
