Seeking Small amount of Land to Grown in/near Portland

?

Land Seeker Description

Hello! My name is Andrea Baeza. I was born in Santiago, Chile – where all of my family is from, and raised in the Maryland/DC area. I came to Portland in 2020 to participate in Zenger Farm’s apprenticeship program and have been consistently farming since. I am hoping to start my own little business this season growing vegetables, flowers for natural dye, and if space allows, possibly experiment with growing some flax for sustainable textile production. I am planning on having a tiny friends and family CSA, with any surplus going to market and/or donation to mutual aid projects and food banks. My hope this year is to have this be a side business and have it be a ‘test the waters’ season to further explore the direction of what my business may look like in the future. I am invested in community support projects. The health of land and people are the main reasons that I am interested in farming. I intend on using only organic and where I am able, regenerative practices as well. I am looking for a small piece of land to extend my operation on. I am currently growing out my backyard, but am hopeful about finding a little more space to grow more on. This could be someone’s yard with extra space, an empty lot, etc. Ideally, I am looking for something located close to me, near SE Portland.

Thank you!

What features of the property are essential?

water, electricity, organic growing history, access to a bathroom

Describe your farming experience

I have been farming since 2014 on and off, and began farming more seriously in 2020 after participating in Zenger Farm's apprenticeship program. Most of my experience has been growing vegetables and flowers, and some work with chickens, goats, sheep, ducks, and horses. I am most interested in growing food for my community, and some flowers for natural dye processing. If space allows, I am interested in experimenting with growing flax for textile processing.

Are you currently farming?

Yes

What are your short term goals for the land

I am just starting as a small business, testing the waters. Between now and 5 years, I'd like to have a better idea of the direction of my farm business, stable revenue streams, and be deeper in the local farming community.

What are your long term goals

I think my long term plans will be realized more heavily by the next five years, but ideally, I'd like to purchase land to grow and live on as locally as possible. Nothing huge. I would be happy with 1 -2 acres.

Describe your housing needs

I don't require any housing needs at the moment. I am just looking for land to grow on.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

I am an immigrant farmer - originally from Santiago, Chile, although largely raised in Maryland. I care deeply about people and relationships. Building a supportive community is one of my biggest interests in farming, and land access for those who have been historically marginalized is an issue I care about. I would do my best to listen, transparently share needs and agreements, address any barriers in the space or myself coming into conflict with people, and build authentic relationship.
