I’m in my early 40s and have a passion for farming. I have been farming since childhood. Currently, I’m working as an engineer. Farming has been my end goal, and I believe starting the farm at this age will allow me to have an established farm to hand over to my kids or anyone who prefers to go into this fantastic way of living.
As a future aspiring organic farmer with a passion for sustainable practices, I’m seeking a piece of land to establish a diverse, small-scale farm focused on raising a variety of animals, including chickens, goats, pigs, and dairy cows, and maintaining beehives, alongside a robust vegetable and fruit garden. I prioritize practical, hands-on animal husbandry, prioritizing their well-being and natural behaviors while producing high-quality, wholesome food. Ideally, the land would offer a mix of pasture, wooded areas, fertile soil suitable for grazing animals, and a productive vegetable patch, allowing for a balanced and integrated farming approach.
Water rights, On-site private well, soil quality (drainage, organic matter content, etc), Sunlight exposure, pasture land, flood risk, organic certification potential, permit and zoning for a building site, electricity (at least a clear path for attain), potential for on-site sewer, community support (in a farming community that support the organic farming practices and small scale animal farming)
Growing up, I farmed in Sri Lanka, where I grew black pepper, leafy greens, and tropical fruits (mango, passionfruit, Asian olives, guava, papaya, and banana). I had about 30 chickens at any given time for eggs, two cows, and two goats.
I have been backyard gardening in the USA for the past 14 years, where I have grown organic square-foot vegetables on raised beds. I have tested methods to improve yields, such as compost tea and regenerative gardening.
During the first five years, I plan to build healthy soil through cover cropping, composting, crop rotation, and selecting pest-resistant varieties. I will also simultaneously learn about the local climate and pest issues to develop effective organic pest management strategies. I will gradually transition your fields to organic production while documenting the practices for potential certification.
Year 1: Soil Assessment and Transition Planning
Year 2: Implementing Organic Practices
Year 3: Expanding Organic Practices and Monitoring
Year 4: Further Soil Building and Market Development
Year 5: Full Organic Production and Refinement
For animal farming
In the first five years, I will focus on establishing a solid foundation with proper infrastructure, pasture management, animal selection, responsible breeding, and consistent health monitoring. I will gradually integrate new livestock species and refine the marketing strategy to sell organic products.
Year 1: Land assessment, legal and regulatory compliance, infrastructure development, Animal selection (Chicken and goats), pasture management, and feed sourcing.
Year 2: Expand livestock (Pigs and bees), the breading program (Chickens and goats), health management, and marketing strategies.
Year 3: Dairy cow introduction, pasture enhancement, value-added products ( honey products, etc.)
Year 4: Shed upgrades, animal welfare focus, marketing expansion.
Year 5: Continuous improvement of the system developed
I focus on building a diverse ecosystem, building healthy soil through practices such as crop rotation, composting, responsible manure management, pest control strategies, prioritizing pasture management, choosing appropriate breeds, implementing rotational grazing, managing health naturally, and gradually scaling production based on market demand while adhering to organic certification guidelines.
Years 5-10: Optimizing Production and Sustainability (Feed management, animal welfare, veterinary practices and recordkeeping)
1. Live stock and farming diversification
2. Organic certification
3. Environmental Stewardship
4. Education and Outreach
I want to build a house for me and my kids. The idea is to make a house such as a barndominium where I can have a space for living as well and to shop/ area to manage the farm (keep the tools and equipment)
