I am looking to either lease or purchase 10+ acres of pasture and a barn (if available) for housing and feeding cattle.
I have spent the last 11 years in the meat processing and livestock production industry and am in partnership with a well known meat processor in the Metro area. I am looking to to expand my personal forage finished beef program in order to accommodate the public demand for locally raised, high quality beef.
This last year has shown how fragile Oregon’s beef supply chain truly is and I am excited to be part of the shift towards more consumers knowing the names of the people that grow their food, and not the just the logos of major food corporations.
What I am looking to begin with (and already have retail avenues in place for) is a property that can handle a rotating stock of 20-50 hd of 100% forage fed and finished cattle. Husbandry will be handled by me or trusted employees with the property owner’s goal and vision taking priority.
This will need to be a good fit for both parties so I understand the need to ask lots of questions beforehand to develop rapport and trust!
I look forward to hearing from local landowners in the hopes of finding someone who can take a chance and be on the ground floor with me for the new future of Oregon-based food.
On-site well. A barn for feeding (unused dairy barn would be ideal) would be great but is not a deal breaker if it isn't present. Pasture is a must if a barn is not available. Pastures can be fenced by me or existing fence in place.
I graduated from the OSU College of agriculture in 2012 with a major in Agricultural Science, and a minor in Animal Science. I worked three summers with a custom hay and straw baling operation in Corvallis. I also Managed the Clark Meat Processing Center (USDA inspected meat processor) on campus between 2010-2012. As far as "farming" is concerned I have raised a small number of cattle with genetics and ration formulation being my areas of focus.
Through my variety of experiences with small livestock producers via mobile slaughter service I have accumulated a wide array of knowledge and skills in all aspects of livestock production.
In the short term I would like to bring carefully selected feeder cattle to the site to feed a finishing ration sourced locally, and ideally 100% forage based. These animals would be fed to a finishing weight of ~1400# and taken to slaughter 2-8 at a time. Ideally I would like to start with 15-20 to dial in the best use of the property and scale from there as my processes streamline.
Long term I would like to scale up the amount of animals finishing and begin to incorporate a breeding program either on or offsite.
No housing needs at this time.
