I am a beginning/veteran farmer looking to get started intensively managing pasture with sheep. I’m searching for pasture within 25 miles of Albany, where I live and work.
I’m looking to start a spring lambing system for both commercial and breeding stock. I am trained and educated in Management Intensive Grazing, and am looking for ground where I can gain more experience and try new methods with MiG grazing, while starting a profitable breeding program for selling breeding stock, as well as direct market lamb.
Enough open pasture to provide enough forage for at least mid-term growth of operation, and water. Access to electricity would be ideal, but willing to run with solar for the right ground. A barn or shelter for lambing would also be ideal, but have creative solutions for running a pasture lambing system if necessary.
I grew up doing farm work in SW Iowa. Over the last few years, I've been pursuing farming seriously. I have gotten experience locally, as a hand at both Grassward Dairy, and Red Bird Acres. I'm also a 2nd year Animal Science student at Linn Benton CC.
Currently, I just raise meat rabbits and run a garden out of my house in Albany.
Get established with a home pasture, where I can begin a breeding program, and start building a flock. Also start building a customer base for lamb, and breeding stock. Achieve profitability in 3-4 years, and start looking to grow. Financial and ecosystem sustainability depends on my management of soils and forages, so my emphasis is first and foremost on managing a system that builds both.
Remain profitable, find connections in the commercial industry to sell breeding stock, grow size of operation, and make a nice supplemental income.
None. I just need pasture within a 25 mile radius of Albany to make it workable for commuting.
I'm open to pass on any knowledge I know to anyone eager to learn.
