Land Seeker Description

Hello,

My wife and I are prospective farmers with intense drive, a strong work ethic, and a vision. We have outgrown our small yard and would like to continue our efforts unobstructed by our wooded surrounding.

We are hoping to rent or lease-to-own a wide open area where we can try our hand at what the land can provide. We are open to learning new techniques and are very resourceful and methodical in our efforts. We’d  also welcome any mentorship or input as well, but would love to be able to try raise some smaller animals and build up pastures as well as separate crop areas.

As this whole process is new to us, but our combined families are excited and willing and able to see us succeed. We would love to make something happen sooner than later and are flexible on terms or creative solutions.

Thank you for your consideration!

-Mando

What features of the property are essential?

Access for a vehicle on site and to/from main roads.
Flat or gently sloping terrain at most.
Ability to clear most of not all vegetation/trees to start fresh
Ability to build structures as needed ie, fencing, sheds, hoop houses, greenhouses, etc.
Water access would be nice, but could have water brought in if close enough.

Describe your farming experience

I've taken some classes as an environmental science major years ago.

Since then, my wife and I have purchase a small house with a barren landscape surrounded by woods at the outskirts of Gresham. We've been able to transform it into a lush setting with some luck in raised garden beds, but unfortunately our sun exposure is insufficient for much of what we have tried, though it does look promising.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land

Depending on the area or existing layout, would want to create a somewhat permanent fencing to contain any animals. The plant hedges for wind mitigation and to further containment.

Next would be building paddocks and acquiring 4-10 pigs to aid in clearing the land and amending the soil as needed.

As that is all occuring, we would create a hen/or rabbit area for immediate meat or eggs.

And experimenting with small scale garden beds to see what would grow well the first season.

The following seasons would be expanding what works into the amended soil areas.

Then moving the paddocks to another area to generate a pasture area for potentially more pigs or possibly some sheep or similar.

Everything is very area dependent, but essentially starting with small animals, testing what can be be grown, then expanding and maybe sticking to a handful of crops and building up a consumer base.

What are your long term goals

Long term plans would be establish our niche and expanding our clientele. If our plan works, have a contract in place to purchase the property outright and hire out help to assist in our operations.

Describe your housing needs

I work for an environmental firm near Tualatin and commute an hour or more during rush hour. Though having a shed or RV on site would be great for intermittent rest after a hard day's work, I do not mind traveling home and not being able to live on site if it was close enough.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

We treat everyone with respect and are very pleasant to be around, we're clean, orderly, and considerate and have a minimal footprint.
We believe in working hard and helping others as much as possible and leaving things better than how we found them.
