I am a 34-year-old businessman who was raised on a ranch, my wife is was similarly raised in a small ranching/farming community in Tahachapy Ca with a decade of animal husbandry experience. We are looking to operate a small farm raising small fiber animals while we cultivate elderberries and ginseng. We wish to create a cottage industry from the farm surrounding the goats: fiber, cheese, goat therapy & health foods.
Our aim is to build a small homestead for our growing family to sustainably flourish. We have experience in fire, and mechanical upkeep, as well as water systems, irrigation, as well as basic plumbing & carpentry. We wish to be caretakers of the land and will engage our fiber animals in the upkeep of the land’s natural ecology & annual fire preparations.
Water rights/private well, electricity, onsite-sewer, on-site housing 3bed 2bath; sewer, power, water. Barns/ structures for small fiber animals: pasture & woodland, rocky hills are a plus, irrigation structures are a plus. Soil type ph 5.5-6.6 looking for moist, well-drained soils in the western-central part of Oregon.
I have experience in early hemp cultivation, I have not done large-scale farming, or managed a farm. (I do not intend to cultivate hemp at this time.)
I have grown everything from vegetables to pitaya, and cactus to orchids. I have some experience working in a professional greenhouse cultivating orchids as the assistant to the manager.
Short-term goals for the land are to update/install structures to accommodate a herd of 40-80 fiber animals, install elderberry groves, and if possible ginseng on the southern-facing shaded slopes. Our hope is to establish our ecologically sound luxury fiber business to achieve solvency within 2 years. This will allow the installation of crops and for them to mature over the first 2-3 years while we hone our cultivation practices. We aim to have a small luxury fiber business and running a direct to customer sales of elderberries & ginseng within 5 years and running in the black within the first 2-3.
Our marketing has been set around online markets and will sell direct to customers.
Long-term goals are to mature the property through rotational grazing, casting native seeds, and the installation of the native plant spices to improve the soil; utilizing the permaculture format to sustain grazing. Our goal is to establish the brand over the first five years and to refine our business model to include additional revenue sources some examples listed below.
We are looking for a permanent dwelling but wish to eventually develop a small portion of the property to run programs for goat therapy, yoga, and at-risk youth programs with cabins, or dorms for the purpose of temporary housing. We wish to be a platform to teach children about nature and a place for troubled minds to find peace.
We will establish ourselves in the local community by engaging local businesses as our suppliers and reinvesting profit into community programs.
We are looking for a 3bed 2 bath house with a full kitchen, water, sewer, power, and preferably internet access.
We have an additional member of the family who would like to live with us and help with the business. We will be happy to build a larger home on site so long as initial housing accommodations are sustainable for 2-3years for constrution.
