Seeking Lease to Own, Lease, Care-taking, Purchase: 1-75 acres Anywhere between the 5 and coast.

Land Seeker Description

Josh here. It seems my career in the music industry has sadly come to a close for a little while.

I have always had a garden and imagined myself owning and operating a small farm later on in life. With the current state of the world I realized there’s no reason to put that off anymore!

Ideally I would love to buy a small property for myself and a few friends from the Portland area to live on and start becoming self sufficient. Currently I’m in Vermont waiting for my pastured broilers to finish so I can move back out to Oregon. I kind of got stuck in Vermont when the pandemic cancelled the tour I was on.

Either way this site seems like an invaluable resource to potentially connect with the right people for a sale or a lease/rental.

I have a lot of landscaping, carpentry, building, mechanic experience, home scale gardening, perennial gardens, small poultry flock management and some larger livestock experience(goats and alapacas). My time in the music/hospitality industries has given me a whole different set of experiences from a kitchen manager at a small restaurant to a production manager at a 2000 capacity theater.

I love revitalizing older properties and being able to use my skills to benefit those around me. My goal is to find a place to move into this fall so I can be ready for next spring to go all in on veg production. If the right land is there I’d also like to do pastured layers and broilers as a revenue source with maybe a few larger livestock to help manage the pasture.

What features of the property are essential?

Water, Workshop, Pasture. A barn and a greenhouse or two would be an excellent addition.

Describe your farming experience

I have been gardening in varying sizes for the past decade. Some years I have been able to produce much more than I'd ever need and donate it to local food banks while other years I've been limited to container gardening in a city. I currently keep a handful of laying hens and have a flock of 50 pastured broilers. I have worked on properties with goats and alpacas but never spent more than a month with either animal

What are your short term goals for the land

I would like to produce enough produce to support myself and those I live with. On top of that I see pastured layers and broilers being the primary commercial products along with value added products from the garden. I'm currently deep in a rabbit hole of the regenerative agriculture model proposed by Richard Perkins over in Sweden. So I'm still isolating what enterprises make the most sense for me and the group of people I would be living with.

What are your long term goals

Full self sustainability for a thriving community on a piece of property. Vertical integration of multiple businesses to support said property.

Describe your housing needs

Would love a 2-4 bedroom house to accommodate myself and a few friends. I also have a 16ft bell tent and can be fully self contained with just a water source. Electricity is always a bonus.
