Seeking Lease: Pasture in NW Washington County for Cattle

Land Seeker Description

Our family is outgrowing our own 7 acres, and our small cattle/dairy herd is growing!  We have been practicing Joel Salatin’s method of grazing rotation, with the goal of restoring and improving the pasture while raising healthy cattle.  We would love to be able to expand our herd and bring your pasture to life!  We live west of Hillsboro, out Hwy 26, so North Hillsboro through the Banks, Manning, Buxton, Timber area would be ideal.

What features of the property are essential?

Pasture, Water source. We are interested in restoring pasture, so even if it is not in great condition, we would be interested in trying to bring it back to life.

Describe your farming experience

We have been homesteading since 2006. In recent years, with our 5 children much older and interested in farm production, we have been increasing the year-round animals on our farm and our productivity. Our 15 year old son has been experimenting with growing wheat and plans to raise a field of potatoes for us and our animals. He and our oldest son have been growing our dairy/cattle herd. We usually raise weaner pigs each year, but are looking to have year-round hogs soon. For 15 years we have pasture raised 100-250 meat chickens each spring. We also have begun to hatch our own chicks for our laying hens. We also plant a large garden each year.

Are you currently farming?

What are your short term goals for the land

Finding pasture for our current bull and steer and beginning to grow a small cattle herd. Finding a breed of pig that is easier on the land so we can keep a sow and boar year round. Starting honeybees. Selling excess produce. Our first goal is to sell enough milk, meat, honey, and produce to cover all of our costs for what we sell and what we raise for our own family.

What are your long term goals

Our youngest son is 15 and is very interested in farming, so we would like to help him have experiences to learn and get started.
