Land Seeker Description

Hello, my wife and I are looking to move out of the city to grow our own food and to have animals. I have been studying permaculture and organic farming for 5 years, with 2 years part-time work and volunteer experience. My wife is a Naturopathic doctor, and a large part of her practice is based on using food as medicine and reconnecting with the land and the animals that sustain us. We are committed to using methods that regenerate the land and add to biodiversity, so will not be using any chemicals. We would love to partner with someone who has some experience both in farming and business but we are willing to go solo too. We would also be happy to trade some of our labor, naturopathic consultation or produce for the lease or help someone who has plans for improving their land.

What features of the property are essential?

Access to some form of year round water and electricity. Ideally the land has not been sprayed with chemicals in the last 2 years.

Describe your farming experience

Currently I work for a tree service company, Colt Tree Service, and am working on getting my arborist license. I was assistant manager at Live Locale, a hydroponics farm, growing culinary herbs and tilapia. I also worked on a CSA at Jeans Farm in Milwaukee OR. We have a small flock of chickens we are raising for eggs. I have years of theory study in permaculture, ecology, and sustainable agriculture. I know how to read the landscape and heal it.

Are you currently farming?

Yes

What are your short term goals for the land

Our short term plan is to Get on some land where we can practice our permaculture skills; raising animals, restoring soil, building a perennial polyculture system with berries, nut and fruit trees, cut flowers and medicinal plants. We would like to share this produce with surrounding communities whether it's through a CSA or Farmers Market program. As my market grows and I get more funds I would like to expand into silvopasture with multi species rotational grazing.

What are your long term goals

Our long term goal is to have a place of our own. We want to build a three part integrated business. The first part is the farming aspect with a diversity of species both plants and animals. The second part of the business is a commercial kitchen to produce value added items and catering. The third piece of the business would be to have lodging for people to rent and event space for retreats or classes.

Describe your housing needs

Ideally we would like to live on property. A house on site would be our first choice but we could also bring in a tiny home or motor home if there are utilities to hook up to.
