Hello and thanks for reading through my Farmer profile here.
My name is Larissa Kama. I’m a 7th generation Oregonian on both sides of my family. Both sides came across the Oregon Trail in the 1800’s and settled modern day, Salmon Creek, WA and Bradford Island in the Oregon Gorge, so my roots run extremely deep here in Oregon.
I’ve been a professional Chef for the past 30 years and have an in depth knowledge of foods and how they are best utilized. As I’ve gotten older, my time in crowded hot, stressful kitchens is starting to lose it’s appeal, whereas, instead growing foods to sell to my professional cohorts has become incredibly attractive.
I have lived half my life in Hawai’i, specifically The Big Island of Hawai’i where I have spent a great deal of time working on and around farms that specialize in fruits, vegetables, goats, nursery and floral and gained a fairly substantial idea of what kind of farming I’m best suited for given my experience and desires combined.
Being born and raised in Oregon has given me to knowledge of our seasons and what they bring. Understanding of soils, and water laws which are unique to Oregon, as well as being a proud steward of our beautiful state to ensure it’s pristine beauty never changes.
I’m looking for a great fit where I can create a successful food producing farm that actually feeds people healthy and nutritious foods, while providing a decent living and contributing to Oregon’s Agricultural growth and success.
5-15 Acres is what I seek. I’d love to take over an existing farm / orchard but am open to all kinds of ideas and / or collaborations. You’ll find I’m a very hard worker, smart as smart gets and an extremely hard and dedicated worker.
Let’s do this!
Essentials include: Water of some kinds, (whether it's water rights, county, private well, etc), Structures that can be used for indoor growing is preferred, good mixed soil for growing vegetation and fruit, non certified organic is fine.
I have a lifetime of farming experience that includes light to moderate land management, goats, nursery, vegetables, herbs and orchards in Oregon and Hawai'i. I'm proud to have a fairly in depth knowledge of zonal farming, as well as pushing the limits of the zones and grow things that "aren't supposed to grow there".
Short term 0-5 yrs is to immediately plant vegetables and herbs to start generating income via markets. stores and restaurants. I have over 30 years as a professional chef and have access to direct restaurant sales, which would be the catalyst for future farm projects for 3-5 yrs+. Plus flowers for harvest.
Long term plans include mature fruit trees, established goats for milk and cheese products, state and national wholesale distribution for vegetables and herbs, Flower farm for harvestable flower stalk, nursery, vineyard, etc.
Property that has living quarters would be wonderful but I'm also ok with providing my own if needed.
Living in Hawai'i half my life has given me a unique opportunity to be a minority living on a sovereign and indigenous island as a Caucasian woman, has shown me how diversity is key to our survival as humans on this planet we all call home. It's way more sensitive than we think and by being the best stewards on and for our Mother Earth, is truly supposed to be our highest priority for all living creatures that call Earth home. I'm honored to do whatever is within my power to contribute to a safe and healthy living experience for all people, regardless of backgrounds, sex, religious beliefs, etc. I try to love everyone and enjoy the love I get back in return.
