Land Seeker Description

We are a mature (mid 40’s and 50’s) married couple with a lifetime of experience farming, raising livestock, and providing educational opportunities to engage community and share knowledge of our smaller scale family farming, animal husbandry, and food production practices.  We raise Clydesdale horses, and would like to add grass fed sheep/cattle, and pastured poultry. We prefer regenerative farming practices with an organic emphasis. We both have reliable employment that can move with us (working remotely) that will provide funding for our venture as we grow our market base.  Husband is in civil engineering and I am an Ag teacher, finishing my masters in Ag Education.

What features of the property are essential?

Home, outbuildings that can be used for livestock and equipment, a shop would be nice. Pasture for grazing, hay fields that we can hay, water and access to it, Having most of it fenced would be ideal, but we can fence as needed... Year round water source such as a creek, river or pond would be nice.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land

The first 5 years we plan to assess and develop infrastructure; assess markets and gain access; build client base for grass fed meats; and develop breeding, grazing and livestock management plans. We want to promote agriculture and community as much as possible, and make positive connections through our farming efforts. If the market is there, we would like to add additional crops and perhaps develop a CSA for meat and eggs. *This is based on a timeline that will allow steady growth and keep us from growing too fast without the structure in place to support it.

What are your long term goals

Our ideal long term plan is to purchase the land and farm that we are developing and building our future on. We want to buy property that we won't outgrow in a few years, and that we can farm full time after approximately 10 years. We want to integrate food security and conservation into our efforts, and be good stewards of the land and livestock that we raise.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

Take time to talk to people... Share the dream, share the successes and failures... always be encouraging and inviting - be role models and advocates for the places and people nearby. Be a good steward, produce quality animals, and stand up for small farmers so we do not lose them!
