Seeking lease >1 acre to grow flowers in Portland

?

Land Seeker Description

Beginner farmer looking for small(er) area to lease in Portland to intensively grow high quality flowers, herbs, starts and edibles using organic, no-till and sustainable practices.   The crops may change as the wants and needs of the community evolve, as will how the crops are sold like CSAs, farmers markets and wholesale routes.  Ideal property would have full sun over the majority of the growing area, uncontaminated soil, water access, small greenhouse or high tunnel and areas to process crops and prepare compost.  Soil health is important and building up the soil structure has always been a focus of my agriculture and permaculture studies through OSU extension courses and education as a Master Gardener.  A clean bill of health in the form of soil test results will be key, but not a deal breaker as long as the lease is long enough to see the results of all the work and expense that comes with “fixing” the soil.

What features of the property are essential?

Water access, full sun farmable land with clean soil for flower and edible production.

Describe your farming experience

I may have more what you may call extreme gardening experience and use urban agricultural farming practices on my plots in Portland but don’t have typical farming experience. I am looking for farming experience that works with my dreams and lifestyle.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land

Within 5 years I plan on having a large enough growing area to produce enough crops to work on a wholesale level for flower production, meaning I will be able to have some product available year round. While wholesale may not be where I want to be when I get there, I plan on having enough space to grow the quantity needed to supply the established members of my CSA and retail customers. Being compensated for my time and also making a profit to invest in the future is the plan but how I get there will be ever evolving.

What are your long term goals

With sales routes established I plan on focusing on techniques that are best for the land and climate. While I already grow using sustainable practices, I would like to master low water or dry farming of multiple crops. In order to experiment with unconventional practices I need enough land to be able to experience crop loss while still fulfilling my sales routes and financial obligations. I don’t want to run an empire or a large team of employees. After 5 years, I hope to be profitable enough to grow beautiful crops and experiment while also investing in community outreach and education.

Describe your housing needs

None

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

Absolutely. I’m open to the perspectives of every background and treat everyone with respect.
