Land Seeker Description

Hi, my name is Matt. I would like to initiate a family-centered market garden, integrating regenerative agriculture practices, permaculture, agroforestry, silvopasture-raised animals, and Tree-range chickens. It’s important to involve my family in this endeavor.

My small family consists of me, my wife, and our 3-year-old daughter. At 45 years young, I am a very hardworking, problem-solving individual who loves the outdoors.

I’m prepared to break free from daily 9-to-5 routine. I’m eager to contribute to the land and community through dedicated effort, all the while raising my family through the farm life.

What features of the property are essential?

Open to all situations.

Describe your farming experience

I am currently employed as an Operations Manager at a large tier 2 cannabis farm here in Oregon. With 3 years of experience, I specialize in cultivating top-quality cannabis in indoor settings. I also have extensive expertise in managing 4 full-term outdoor greenhouses and 4 light-deprivation greenhouses. My skill set includes maintaining and repairing greenhouses, heaters, fans, and lights. Daily responsibilities encompass tasks such as cloning, watering, fertilizing, defoliation of plants, pest and disease identification, and the implementation of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to address issues.
Its just my current job in agriculture, I don't want to continue growing cannabis.

Are you currently farming?

What are your short term goals for the land

Top goals right from the beginning.
Soil Health Enhancement: Implement cover cropping, no-till and minimal tillage practices to improve soil structure and fertility.
Composting Program: Develop a composting system to recycle organic materials and enrich the soil.
Crop Diversification: Introduce a variety of crops to increase biodiversity and attract beneficial insects.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Establish natural pest control methods to reduce the reliance on synthetic pesticides.
Water Conservation: Implement efficient irrigation systems and water-saving techniques to minimize water usage.
Local Market Presence: Build relationships with local markets, restaurants, and consumers to establish a strong customer base.
Develop a budget and financial plan to ensure profitability and cover operational costs.
Plan to break even first two years.

What are your long term goals

Over the next 5 to 10 years, the goals for our market garden encompass a range of strategic initiatives. We aim to expand our production by increasing the variety and quantity of crops grown, allowing us to cater to a wider customer base and boost revenue. Infrastructure enhancements are also a priority, with investments planned for greenhouses, irrigation systems, and storage facilities to improve year-round productivity and overall efficiency. Improvement of soil health through sustainable practices like cover cropping and composting, ensuring the long-term fertility of our land. Diversifying our market presence by establishing connections with local restaurants, grocery stores, farmers' markets, and online platforms will be crucial.

Describe your housing needs

I don't necessarily need housing, but if the right opportunity is available, I would consider it.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

I'd ensure that all individuals are treated respectfully and fairly, while actively addressing any instances of discrimination.
