Seeking land to develop a regenerative farm

?

Land Seeker Description

I am a regenerative organic farmer, educator, and permaculture practicioner. For the past 6 years I have been farming, teaching, and creating closed-loop farming systems to build resilience in the soil and produce the highest quality crops. I am looking for a lease-to-own deal, a partnership, or a creative solution to guarantee the work I do is lasting. I do not have a specific acreage in mind. I would love to find the right place to deepen community roots through cultivating nutrient dense food. I want to create a small garden to provide  for wholesale accounts, a potential CSA model, and with help even markets. I would like to create food access opportunities through donating to underserved populations, and creating sliding scale programs. I would like to create a perennial food forest as well to experiment growing different trees, shrubs, herbs, and perennial and ancestral foods. The idea is cuttings and extra starts can be sold in a nursery style to bring in more income. I am open to raising animals seasonally or all year depending on the help I have. I would prefer for the property to have water rights, and electricity. A greenhouse would be necessary. Barn would be helpful but not top priority and housing of course is a plus, but if there is local housing available I do not mind commuting. the dream is to create a closed-loop farming system, teach people, and to produce the full-diet. I would like to work towards being 100% self-sufficient with electricity and water as well.

What features of the property are essential?

I can work with almost any type of land. I need water rights, a well, and it would be very helpful to have any type of infrastructure whether it is a barn, greenhouse, or home. Does not have to be certified organic, although I would steer away from heavy chemical use plots. I am open to discussing the unique situations every land has.

Describe your farming experience

I have been cultivating using biodynamic and permaculture principles for 5 years and this is my 6th. I have helped manage interns on a full-diet biodynamic organic farm for 3 years in central, OR and had my own regenerative farm in WA, and NY. I consult with farms, landowners and gardener. I also teach workshops on permaculture farming principles.

Are you currently farming?

Yes

What are your short term goals for the land

To start, I would create the annual vegetable/ herb garden to produce income, and host workshops/ volunteer opportunities and consultations. This will speed up the development process and provide education to the community. The first year producing for wholesale accounts, potential farmers market, CSA, and donations will be the main income stream. The second year expanding to selling starts, and if there are enough perennials planted the first year cuttings.
Either in the first or second year, I would like to plant fruit trees, and perennial crops if not already there to develop the food forest and nursery. The garden can be 1/2-1 acre while the food forest can start with being 1/2-1 acre and over time expanding if space allows. Having small animals would be great such as chickens, potentially sheep and goats.
I would like to create compost piles, a compost toilet, rainwater catchment if the county allows it.

What are your long term goals

Being realistic, I am open to getting the infrastructure mentioned in short-term goals accomplished in the longer term.
My plans are to create a fully closed-loop farming system that requires little maintenance and needs no inputs other than what exists on the farm. I would continue to expand outlets of sales, and dial in where the niche in the market it. Nurseries, and perennial foods will take priority. With the success of the business expanding the food forest to be at minimum 2 acres will allow for a substantial U-pick operation to happen which makes the land more inviting to community. Eventually incorporating animals such as sheep, chickens, goats would be ideal to provide meat, fibers and added fertility to the land. I would like to host community events, workshops, and volunteers. I would love to continue experimenting with ancestral foods, seed saving, natural building, and if there is no home already existing on the property for me to live, then building a small home. It would be beneficial to have employee housing provided, and that can be discussed as our relationship develops.

Describe your housing needs

A home to live in on the land, or locally would be my ideal. I can manage with a temporary structure like a yurt for the short term.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

I will be a LGBTQ+ safe space for anyone who has an interest in learning, teaching, and sharing their unique gifts. I welcome all people with open arms, as we share our unique cultures and life stories. I have plans to teach local schools, and invite community to the land to share in the reciprocity of our harvests. I plan to honor the land by learning the ancestral practices and lineages of the stewards of the land who came before me.
