Land Seeker Description

Hello! –  My partner and I are seeking land (& shelter), where we can grow and hone land stewarding and food growing skills while supporting the local food system. Both of us have backgrounds rich in the food sector: cooking, production, kitchen operations, research and development with 1-2 years experience in small-scale farming, irrigation, carpentry, composting, fencing, infrastructure set-up, value-added  and livestock grazing. Ideally hope to find a space to steward the land implementing organic practices, using local resources to build out composting, and trialing value-added products (dependent on what the land grows well) with focus on fermentation and potentially soups — all with the goal of sustaining, supporting, enriching the land and the community around.  Partnering with local farmers, finding gaps in the system, working on gleaning projects – utilizing food scarps for value-added, compost projects. Engaging local schools.

What features of the property are essential?

Water rights or well. Preferrably land that has been employing organic practices, open to help conversion from conventional to organic.

Describe your farming experience

Composting, mixed vegetables, haskap orchard, rotation grazing (cattle), fence building, irrigation (3 acres), herbs, teas, seed production.

Are you currently farming?

Yes

What are your short term goals for the land

Soil testing, mixed vegetables to small CSA base or farm stand, finding commissary kitchen to begin trialing fermentation projects, working with landowner on what has previously worked well and potential merge those financial assurances with goals of value added projects. DIVERSITY of crops. Dry land farming.

What are your long term goals

Long term to have rotating, diverse crops (lean toward natives, perennial crops, flowers, pollinators, diversity of species), to learn what species grow well in specific conditions, utilizing produce for value added fermentation or soups, work with local schools for educational days, potential to work with local farmers on seed production, gleaning or utilizing produce for further value added products, potential for farm stand or cafe. Ideas for season extension - greenhouse starts (?)/ Diversifying!

Describe your housing needs

We are: 2 Adults, 1 dog, 1 cat.
Would enjoy: Running water, 700 sq feet minimum.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

Anti-racism, anti-hate, encourage diversity on all things land and soil = Open minds flourish. Understanding the effects of uncontrolled biological and genetic makeup on the human psyche. Recognizing our unique histories are not controlled by us and they in turn impact our future realities. Being easy, forgiving on one another and ourselves.
