Seeking Food Forest Nursery and Regenerative Ag Site .25-3 acres near Portland

?

Land Seeker Description

Hi, I’m seeking a long-term site to develop a nursery that specializes in perennial nut, fruit, berry, and herbaceous plants and to establish a demonstration food forest site consisting of many fruit and nut tree guilds with a focus on pest/disease resistant crops, especially chestnut, hardy pecan, paw paw, and medlar (among many others).    This would likely be in conjunction with Portland Food Forest Initiative, a non-profit I started whose goal is to install food forests/forest gardens, build community, and educate the public.

I have some organic farming experience, a fair amount of gardening experience, and a PDC from OSU.

What features of the property are essential?

Access to water, unpolluted soil, storage for tools.

Describe your farming experience

I've worked on several organic farms over the years, but am not interested in doing a market garden in a conventional sense.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land

Establish a nursery using air pruning boxes for tree nut seedlings and beds for herbaceous food and medicine plants. Establish a productive agroforestry system, using aisles for annuals to cash flow the longer-maturing systems. Save seeds of food and medicine plants for sale.

What are your long term goals

Use the established forest garden as a demonstration site to educate the public and promote regenerative agriculture and remediation of lawns with food forests. I hope to be selling zone appropriate tree nut seedlings on a large scale and to provide access to perennial foods which are otherwise unknown to most Oregonians.

Describe your housing needs

I live in Portland and don't necessarily need housing.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

A large part of this project is to develop relationships within the community that are inclusive. Regenerative agriculture is anti-colonial, and pro-social.
