Seeking 1-20+ acres in NW Oregon for diversified vegetable and berry production, and research

?

Land Seeker Description

I am seeking land for diversified vegetable and berry production for market and conduct field research, with the goal of enhancing farming techniques as well as developing more resilient crop varieties. Ultimately, I would also like to host workshops, educational events, and provide a resource for other small farmers, though food production for market will be the initial focus wherever we land. I am open to lease, buy, lease-to-own, and possibly partner with a landowner.

The ideal location:

  • Is 1.5-2 hours from Portland
  • Is 5-20+ acres, with at least 1-2 acres of flat arable soil
  • Has water available for agricultural use
  • Has outbuildings for tools and crop storage (e.g. barns, shops, sheds)
  • Has good southern exposure
  • Is not directly adjacent to large conventional fields where blow-over of pesticides/herbicides is a risk
  • Has Class II or better soils (not crucial but preferred)
  • Has existing greenhouse(s) or space and ability to construct
  • House, cabin, or other short term lodging option not critical, but a plus!

** These are ideal traits of the land, but most are flexible. Finding workable land and activating the farm is the priority! **

What features of the property are essential?

Water for agriculture, arable soil (Class II and better preferred), good southern exposure, wind protection

Describe your farming experience

I have been working in ag and horticulture for nearly two decades doing production, research, and operations management with organic farms and nurseries around the Pacific Northwest, Central America, and Turkey. Growing food is one of my greatest passions but I'm also driven by the urgent need to further bridge innovation with farming practices in order to support small farmers and promote sustainable food systems. I founded and operate an organization with the mission of providing growers with science-based tools and skills to enhance their operations and stay competitive in the face of ever evolving challenges like climate change and economic uncertainty. I am deeply committed to strengthening food security and farm economies at local and global scales, and see education and community engagement as cornerstones of this endeavor. In addition to many years of farming and nursery production experience, I hold a BA in Agroecology and Sustainable Farming, an MSc in Microbiology & Plant Sciences.
