Seeking 1-10 acres for lease in Union County

Land Seeker Description

Experienced market farmer looking for space to grow.  I’ve been farming for ten years, recently moved to La Grande, and hope to start a small farm business. What crops I grow will depend on the site, but I’m interested in food, flowers, and medicinal herbs NOT INCLUDING hemp. I am open to leasing with or without the potential to purchase, hope to manage organically, and intend to keep the operation small enough to work mostly by myself for at least the first couple of years.

What features of the property are essential?

Water rights, irrigation pump and lines

Describe your farming experience

Most of my farming experience is with cut flowers and vegetables. I spent six years as a farm hand at a six-acre market farm in Walla Walla, and later came back to manage production at that same farm. At that farm we worked a team of draft horses and later converted to tractor production. We were certified organic. I also spent a season working on a small organic orchard.

Are you currently farming?

What are your short term goals for the land

In the first five seasons I hope to establish a business and customer base, though particular crops will be determined by where the land is and what infrastructure exists. I hope to invest in small machinery to streamline production and field preparation and reduce labor stress. I hope to find a long-term lease or apply for an FSA loan within the first five seasons.

What are your long term goals

Long-term land lease or ownership.
Physically sustainable farm labor, aided by machinery.
"Regular" customers and relatively predictable sales each season.
Transition to more education on the farm, for other farmers and local students.

Describe your housing needs

I live in La Grande and do not need on-farm housing.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

I will manage the land without chemical controls and with the most positive impact possible (reduce or eradicate invasive weeds on the premises, emphasize soil health). I hope to model a form of farming that is sustainable for both the earth and the farmer, and intend to make myself available as an educator once I am established.
