Hello!
We are a family of 4 looking to find our way out of the city of Bend and get back into farming/ranching. My partners family has a small family farm back in Florida, where they raised pigs and fruit trees. I am from John Day where we raised cattle and hay.
I was an avid 4H-er back in my high school days and had many local fair championships and State Championships in a variety of disciplines. I hold a degree in Natural Resources with an emphasis in sustainability.
We are looking for a work/live opportunity to lease or lease to own farmland in Deschutes County. We own our home in Bend and currently sub-lease part of our property. So we not only have land management skills but also rental/property management.
We are both gainfully employed. I work remotely from home and have a flexible work schedule that allows me to build my work schedule around my personal schedule. Our overall goal is to build something that generates enough income for our farm to support itself and eventually to allow at least one of us to leave the work force.
Our hopes are to find a place to allow small ruminants such as sheep and goats as well as farming vegetables and possibly a young orchard.
We would plan to become involved in 4H and develop a competitive breeding program for the livestock we are able to breed. Not only would we be working to create a profitable farm but we would also work in a non-profit capacity to give back to the future generations of farmers and ranchers.
Consumable water for the house, well or infrastructural. Sewer or septic. Indoor plumbing. A barn for hay and equipment storage.
Irrigation equipment or assistance in obtaining if the land is irrigated (preferred).
We both have been raised from youth on farms. In additon to my farming/ranching, I hold a degree in Natural Resources which includes courses emphasizing sustainability and agriculture.
Short term would begin with preparing the land for rotational livestock grazing. Building fence, cross fencing, building maintenance for hay storage and animal sheltering.
Soil testing and growing hay crops to see how the land functions. Weed management.
Stable breeding program. Crop/farm share program fully developed. Local presence such as Locavore and farmers markets. Active 4H group.
We would need at least a 2 bedroom home. Preferably 3 bedrooms. We would need an option for internet (I have shopped rural providers and have some options for this too).
Provide accommodations to people with disabilities as we are able.
To contact a land seeker, you must first create a land listing and have it approved by our staff. Thank you.
