I am a 39 year old former environmental geologist transitioning to a career in farming. I am passionate about gardening and I have been developing my skills for the previous 5 years in my backyard. I will use those skills to begin a market garden and pasture poultry (broilers and turkeys). I am looking for approximately 4 to 5 acres of land to lease near Hillsboro, OR, preferably; I am also looking for lease opportunities throughout most of Oregon or SW Washington and I would be willing to relocate.
I am flexible in my short-term goals and I would be open to other arrangements other to leasing. For example, if you are willing to lease me land in exchange for help with your farm.
Access to water for growing vegetables, washing vegetables, and processing chickens is my only essential feature. Water for washing vegetables and processing chickens needs to be potable.
I grew up in Iowa and moved to the west coast to attend the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, where I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. I don’t have any experience working on a farm, but I have grown a vegetable garden and raised backyard chickens for about 5 years. My previous career (as an environmental geologist) required that I complete tasks that challenge me, deliver profitable projects while keeping clients happy, work in challenging field environments, and pushed me to keep growing. I plan on using those skills to help me be successful as a farmer.
My short-term goal is to develop a business consisting of a small vegetable and flower market garden and pasture poultry. I want to develop a customer base, begin raising poultry, and grow a successful farm on leased land. I plan on offering on-farm pick-up of food to customers, as well as off-site sales.
I plan on bringing a portable brooder house and portable pens for the pasture poultry. I would also construct a hoop house and a small greenhouse for vegetables and for the laying chickens over wintertime
My long-term plan is to operate a farm that provides a ‘normal’ salary. I want to expand the market garden to include a greater variety of vegetables and include fruit; additionally, I want to expand the pasture livestock to include pork and beef. Therefore, I will plan to lease or purchase additional land after 3 or more years. I have a flexible approach to farming and I my long-term plans will develop as I grow as a farmer.
I would not need housing if the land is in Washington or Yamhill counties. I would be open to relocating and renting a home very near to the land for lease. Additionally, I would be open to living in a tiny home, RV, or camper van.
To contact a land seeker, you must first create a land listing and have it approved by our staff. Thank you.
