Artist and aspiring farmer, I’m seeking a welcoming place to cultivate fiber crops for fine art paper, possibly incorporating market gardening on the side. My interests include growing flax, kozo, and mitsumata. Mitsumata is a small, perennial bush, while kozo is a small member of the mulberry family that requires annual cutting back (coppicing). My initial plan is to cultivate approximately 0.2 acres of mitsumata, 0.2 acres of flax, and 0.2 acres of kozo, with the potential to expand as needed. Regarding market gardening, I intend to start with an area of about 0.125 acres. Additionally, we’ll need permission to construct a shed for storing dried bark, tools, and eventually, paper-making equipment. Access to water on the property is essential, and while power is a desirable feature, we’re open to obtaining permission to install photovoltaic panels and batteries for electricity generation. I’m seeking a patient and understanding individual who shares our passion for helping an artist in their pursuit of the elusive.
Water and plenty of sun. Organic type of gardening previously in the land, since the paper product is intended to be conservation quality and no chemicals should be present in its manufacture to be qualified as such.
Just a backyard gardener, just going to go slowly and try to learn and see how it goes.
Get started planting the fiber crops, first year flax harvest 2nd year flax and kozo, third year flax, kozo and mitsumata. After that I should be established and producing paper regularly in the winter. During the summer I would like to experiment with market gardening as time allows.
If available, own the land after 5 years and increase the amount of land acquired if possible to 2-3 acres.
I have housing rental, would welcome an arrangement for housing if one were available.
I’m myself Latino so I’m pretty open to people of any background sexuality etc. The most important thing to me is that people see the value in other human beings and treat them accordingly.
