We have 10 years of homesteading experience. We have 2 Nigerian dwarf goats, a flock of 20 artisan laying chickens, and a Border Collie named Friendly. We are looking for space for the animals and growing room for some high tunnels and a small propagation house.
Some of our favorite crops to cultivate are dahlias, garlic, and leafy greens. Our practices revolve around no till and permaculture techniques. We enjoy working long days on the land and reaping the benefits of the harvest.
Our goal is to find a community or another couple that we can work together with. We are also interested in leasing property and getting started ourselves.
We both have 10 years of farming experience. I have worked with a few different mentors that run market gardens in Chimacum, Washington and Gaston, Oregon. During these experiences I was able to gain a perspective of some of the many challenges that a farmer faces. I learned that persistence, hard work, and ingenuity always provide the answers when challenges arise on the farm.
Our main focus is growing the bulk of our own nutrition, animal feed, and fertilizers to minimize our living costs.
We focus on 4 avenues for making money
1) Dahlia bulbs - We have an amazing library of dahlia bulbs that we have been collecting for the past 5 years and selling them has been a profitable for us the past 2 winters.
2) Seed Garlic- Garlic is a favorite of ours. We have been expanding our seed library for the past 3 years and can’t wait to start marketing it.
3) Appple Cider Vinegar- Fermenting is a great passion of ours and brewing acv is one of our favorite pastimes. It is very popular for its medicinal qualities. We have been brewing Apple Cider for over 6 years.
4) We have a premium chicken flock that we have been working with for 5years. Our favorite breeds are Copper Marans and Silkies. We also have specialty egg layers that lay olive and emerald color eggs. I foresee expanding our flock and distributing fertilized eggs as a great business venture.
We would like to focus on expanding the 4 avenues we use to make money. The market for high quality dahlias and garlic is very strong. I believe that we can become a great source for high quality dahlia bulbs and garlic seeds.
I would also hope to have developed a thriving apple orchard and be bottling farm to table apple cider vinegar.
We have an RV that we can use for housing.
