We are a farming couple, presently developing a vegetable and flower seed production business. We’ve been farming fresh vegetables for several years as managers, and are now seeking to establish our own family farm. Ideally we would have a long term lease scenario, maybe even a lease-to-own option, but at this point we are open to short term leases (2-5 years) as well. Our off farm work allows us to be very flexible in location and we would consider any place that has: water rights, soil good for vegetables, 5+ acres, housing for lease on site or likely we could get housing nearby/or possibility for us to erect housing on site, and is within 2 hours of an airport. Any land we steward would be treated with consideration for long term health and resilience. We would also intend to get the land certified organic as soon as possible.
Water rights, soils suitable for vegetables (class 1, 2, 3), some kind of housing scenario.
We started as apprentices on small farms and worked our way up to middle management and on to farm management roles. Most recently I developed and ran a sustainable agriculture program and school farm at a community college--which was very rewarding but also really fueled the desire to start our own family farm.
Annual and biennial production of vegetable crops. Grow to a size of about 4 cultivated acres. Be flexible to see what the market niches we can fill. Begin to integrate pastured animals at a very small scale for fertility and land management. One of us will be farming full time, the other part time. Depending on the available resources and infrastructure (irrigation, barns, etc..) we would need to consider what we would invest into or build (also depends on the length of the lease).
We would desire to cultivate a worker/owner cooperative farm business so others can share in the equity of the farm. There aren't that many models we can look to so we'll see how how we can best develop that. Both of us farm full time and be able to at least full time employ 2-3 individuals.
We have housing if the land is within 30 minutes of Eugene Oregon. If the land is much farther than that then we would need to lease a home on site, or nearby. Depending on the location and length of lease terms, we would be open to creating housing options if permissible.
To contact a land seeker, you must first create a land listing and have it approved by our staff. Thank you.
