My wife and I are seeking a complete career change. We would like to start an organic farm and think a partnership to learn from an experienced farmer would be greatly beneficial. We are in the process of writing a business plan with the family and while we work those parts out we want to get started. We currently reside in Virginia, but want to relocate to Oregon or Northern California. Our interest areas include orchards, berries, flowers, herbs, mushrooms, vegetables, and hemp. My background is geospatial science, so I’d like to incorporate a drone research component into studying crop health with NIR and impacts climate change will have on crops.
I'm not too caught up into this essentials list, other than water rights would be good. I think the right place is out there, just need the connection to be made.
Our farming has only ever been backyard. We both spent time obtaining graduate degrees and now realize we don't want to work in office settings anymore. My brother and sister are out west and we hope to grow into a business with them over the next 10 years. Additionally my wife has a background in grant administration, so we want to explore grant opportunities that include research or environmental stewardship as related to the property we are farming.
Short term would be to gain valuable farming experience from a mentor for the next several years. During this time we would like to contribute to the property by helping site plan unused portions or improve environmental conditions and practices. Our goal is to find the right mentors to help us make a living from a new lifestyle.
Long term plans would include creating a destination retreat farm for workshops, education, and wellness with our family. We have decided to go into farming and creating a life together where we can enjoy whatever time we have remaining in a relaxing setting.
My wife and I are the only two people and we have 5 beagles. We would like to have a fence around the house we occupy and would be willing to install to keep them secure.
To contact a land seeker, you must first create a land listing and have it approved by our staff. Thank you.
