My and I came to Salem from Beijing two years ago and bought a 60-acre flat land nearby. This land is ten minutes from Salem and one hour from Portland. It has a 1800sqft three-bedroom house and a 4000sqft barn, it has been powered and connected to the fiber internet network.
The land has water rights priority to the 1950s. There are currently two wells, the smaller one for water supply to the house and the main one for irrigation (this well has been replaced with new equipment and designed for 160 gallons per minute, the main water right is also derived from this well). There is also a small creek flowing through the land, dividing the land into two parts, though the creek has very low water flow during the summer.
The land was leased to a nearby dairy in the past. Fortunately, the dairy has been certified organically, so the land does not need a conversion period. It has obtained organic certification from Oregon Tilth after I recovered this land from the dairy.
At present, 3 acres of land has been laid out for vegetable gardens, irrigation water pipes have been laid underground, and 198 100ft raised beds have been built on 11 of 16 plots, the other 5 plots are only plowed. Most of the other land is still idle, and we have a few sheep and a few chickens, which occupy a little land.
Most of the facilities and tools needed for the farm are in place, including an 18*100ft simple greenhouse (according to a tutorial on youtube), six 14*100 moveable hoop houses brought from farmer’s friend, BCS tractors and accessories, an electric cart, hand tools, and organic seeds. A big cooler has been set up in the garage, and the vegetable washing equipment will also be set in the garage, which is not yet completed.
Build a market garden of Jean-Martin style. Smaller planting area, diversified and more profitable varieties, as long as possible planting season, direct sales to the market
Pursue more diversity and connect more people
