Job Summary

The Weekend Farm Lead is responsible for assisting farm management by coordinating the work for the farm crew, performing all organic farming related tasks required to grow a wide variety of medicinal herbs and plants, and keeping accurate records of all activities as required. This position is designed to provide support and guidance for the farm crew on the weekends. This position is a seasonal role from March – December. The following duties are performed in a safe and timely manner, thereby contributing to the overall successful operation and growth of the organization.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Ensures optimal productivity at the farm by actively working in each area as directed, including the following: propagating, planting, preparing soils and seed flats, applying fertilizers, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, and harvesting crops as directed.
  • Responsible for achieving optimal productivity when directing the farm crew.
  • Ensure safe equipment use and practices are followed while operating tractors, responsible for training safety awareness of the hazards associated with working close to tractors.
  • Assists with optimal harvest yields, by following harvesting and processing instructions; including but not limited to, picking, separating, cleaning, drying, and evaluating of crop quality of each herb according to established procedures.
  • Works with other crew members to ensure proper post-harvest handling and timely delivery of all harvested crops.
  • Ensures accurate record keeping of all assigned farming activity by keeping complete, legible logs of all      planting, production, harvest and delivery activities.
  • Provides training to new farm members and teaches safety training as needed.
  • Supports with identifying apparent crop disease or pest problems
  • Supports installation of irrigation valves, piping and sprinkler heads, and adjusts, as needed.
  • Responsible for providing transportation for workers to stores and other public places.
  • Provide Spanish-language support as needed for farm crew.
  • Responsible for achieving optimal productivity when directing farmers.
  • Works with farm team members to ensure proper post-harvest handling and timely delivery of all harvested crops.
  • Provides training to new farm members and teaches safety training as needed.

  • Demonstrates the ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Works effectively in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Maintains strong attention to detail, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
  • Provides reliable backup support to the farm crew and supervisor as assigned.
  • Willing and able to travel weekly to perform errands,  transport crew members, and make deliveries as needed.
  • Actively participates in team meetings, contributing ideas for continuous process and operational improvements.
  • Proficient in the safe and efficient use of hand tools and small power tools by adhering to operating instructions, completing required training, and ensuring proper tool storage.
  • Promotes and maintains a safe work environment by consistently following safety protocols, completing mandatory safety training, and staying alert to potential hazards.
Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, soil science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • 3 + years of related hands-on seasonal farming experience
  • Baseline ability to speak and understand Spanish (fluency highly preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the cultivation of herbs preferred.
  • Experience with tractors and other farm equipment

Working Conditions

  • Work Environment: Primarily outdoors, working in all weather conditions
  • Travel Requirements: 25%
  • Physical Demands: This job requires some lifting of 50 lbs. or less.
