Seeking Lease or Lease to Own for Regenerative Vegatable farm: 1-5 acres in Jackson County

?

Land Seeker Description

Howdy, my name is Jeff Gowen and I am a regenerative farmer here in southern Oregon, I farm with one other business partner named Edward in Lake Creek Oregon, our business name is Oak Mountain Farm ( oakmtnfarm.com ). We are a non-certified organic vegetable farm that prioritizes soil health and conservation of our native soils. We mainly sell to restaurants here in the valley, some including Cocorico and Alchemy in Ashland, and Decant in Medford.

In our efforts we follow the principles of conservation agriculture and farm at small scale 1/2 acre-1 acre max. We are a bio intensive farm, meaning our beds see multiple different crops throughout the season (4-5). Using these method of farming we produce an equivalent amount of food on 1/4 acre as a 2-3 acre farm would with less water and inputs needed for our system.

We are in seeking small parcel of land to move our quicker, higher rotation crops like baby greens and baby root vegetables closer to town to avoid the constant commute out to Lake Creek. Looking for a lease or a lease to own. Would love to connect further!

What features of the property are essential?

Water rights are the most important, or on site private well, irrigation structures and infrastructure would be nice but with my background in irrigation design it is not required. Soil type is important as well. Electricity would be nice too.

Describe your farming experience

Our farming experience is extensive, we have owned and operated Oak Mountain Farm for 3 seasons now, a regenerative farm located in Lake Creek, Oregon, selling specialty produce to chefs here in the Rogue Valley. We have also worked on many organic farms in the Rogue Valley before hand, some include Runnymede Farm, Barking Moon, and Rusted Gate Farm for combine total of about 7 plus years of part time employment.

Are you currently farming?

Yes

What are your short term goals for the land

Our short term goals include rejuvenation of soil and soil microbiome using organic mulches, cover crops, and compost. And sustainably farming the land for high rotation crops like specialty baby greens, and baby root vegetables for chefs here in the Rogue Valley.

What are your long term goals

Long term goals include going full time at the farm, we have been working at our farm part time for the past 3 seasons , leasing land, until we can find better land, closer to home. Although being part time we have managed to double our profit each year, and have never lost money since its conception. Going full time is our dream and we believe by moving closer to town we can achieve that within a single season. We are also interested in season extension, growing in a beautifully built, automated greenhouse for 4 season growing.

Describe your housing needs

We don't necessarily need any housing accommodations, although if housing is available we would be interested in living on the land. A barn or structure for processing and cleaning vegetables would be nice but not required.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

Yes we strive to create these environments not only for ourselves and our land owners but for education for our community.
