Hi, I’m Nick. I’m 31 and working towards purchasing forested land to farm.
I’d like to restore and maintain forested land as healthy and balanced with a mix of ages and native species. I also want to use designs like seepage ponds, swales and cross-contour plantings to capture and keep more water in the land. My goal is to cultivate native understory plants with a “forest nursery” method, and sell seed to local nurseries and directly to consumers.
I am hoping to lease land to begin farming, build my business and gain the experience that will help me apply for land loans, while continuing to save for a down payment. I have established an off-farm income to support farming. I am passionate about land stewardship and using permaculture ideas to make farms more resilient, especially to drought.
willing to take any opportunity I can find and use it to learn and grow
Took several college classes in pest prevention and management, direct farm marketing, animal husbandry. Have focused more on developing the off-farm income, trying now to get the farming experience.
identify species which will grow best in the conditions available on that specific property, and most effective seed collecting methods. get retail seed dealer license. connect with local nurseries and test different online sale platforms.
expand plantings, using permaculture designs. carry out a forest management plan. take OSU land steward training course. If permission from landowner, or I can acquire land, work with appropriate experts to plan and dig seepage ponds.
simple and basic. I have two friendly cats. We need shelter, a roof that doesn't leak and a way to stay warm in winter.
I've lived in my car and also camped "in the field" for weeks working with conservation corps. Pretty creative and willing to find ways to work with what's available.
I practice to be more openminded, learning to actively listen to others' experiences, look for the similarities between us rather than the differences, and look for ways to work together to meet everybody's needs.
To contact a land seeker, you must first create a land listing and have it approved by our staff. Thank you.
