Dahlia breeding! Seeking land close to PDX

?

Land Seeker Description

Hi there,  I live in Portland, getting passionate about dahlia breeding following a gorgeous “sport” popping up in my yard last year. Starting an operation in my back yard, but I’m beyond maxed out of space! Looking for land to breed, keep “drop pots” to test new varieties from seed, grow/ cultivate tubers.

What features of the property are essential?

water on site, full sun, close to Portland, a storage space/ green house would be amazing too but not necessary at this stage.

Describe your farming experience

None.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land

Dahlia breeding. Typically only 1 in 100 to 1 in 1000 dahlias from seed are considered worth keeping as a new breed. So I need sunny space, with water, to keep 4 inch "drop pots" to grow and cull new varieties from seed, hopefully about 10 special new varieties per year, space to grow the "parent" varieties and conduct hand pollination, and and space to grow/ cultivate tubers from winning varieties. I've been working with raised beds in my yard, but have outgrown the space.

What are your long term goals

To have a dahlia breeding (and branding!) business that generates 100k/ year or more in income.

Describe your housing needs

Do not need housing.

What will you do as a farmer to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone on your farm and in your community?

I am a global women's rights activist in my day job, so I interact will people of all diverse backgrounds all day, every day. I love it.
