Seeking farmer to grow vegetables on 1-2 acres, half an hour NW of Portland

Description

We have a big garden area that is fenced within our farm, that has been used for vegetables in the past. Other projects are taking more of our time than we anticipated, and we are looking for a person or couple that would like to grow vegetables for market, or CSA, or restaurants. Someone that lives in the city, and wants to farm in the country. There is about an acre fenced now, with the possibility of expanding it to another acre.

We won’t charge cash for the use of the land, but we do have some conditions that are not negotiable, and we would like a small share of the produce.  This is more like a collaboration/partnership for the right person. Ideally, you would have grown for market before. While I am more than willing to share what I’ve learned, I’m not looking to train someone that is totally new.

You won’t need much, other than maybe your favorite hand tools, and a strong determination to work hard. I can till the garden for you in the spring and fall. Irrigation is overhead, with movable aluminum pipes, and a gas pump that we setup every June, and take down every fall. No drip irrgation, this is non-negotiable. In the garden there is a small tool shed, and we are moving a small hoophouse in there as well from another location on the farm. I have used the small hoophouse to raise thousand of starts. We have well water for washing the vegetables, but a washing/packing shed will have to be built. The garden fence also needs some repairs. You will be fighting the weeds in the first season/s, and gophers are abundant. I do have a Varmitgetter device if you feel brave enough to use it. You can also use some of the manure we generate.

If you’re planning a CSA, no pick-up at the farm. No parties, or gatherings, or any other social events.

If you have experience with animals, that is a plus, but not a deal breaker if you don’t. I milk cows and goats, and keep a flock of happy laying hens, and other pets. Ideally, you would help me occasionally with my chores, and I can help you in the garden as well.

I can share with you marketing strategies that work if you need help in that area.

There is more to discuss and agree upon, but hopefully this will give you an idea of what we are about.
