We are a 20 acre historic educational farm near Silverton, OR, east of Salem. We operate at a homestead scale, with currently much of our farm products staying on the land to feed us and over 500 visitors a year. We are looking for someone with experience to take on management of the gardens (currently over 1/2 acre, and expanding), with the option to market a good portion of vegetable production to local direct markets.
We are ideally looking for someone passionate about sharing gardens with people of all ages, mostly children. Farmer would have a great deal of independence; however, there will be lots of opportunities for engagement, help and mentorship (if desired) from others on site, as well as school groups and volunteers.
On site, we also maintain fruit trees and berries, a small raw milk goat dairy, fiber sheep, two horses, poultry, and woodlot. Involvement in other farm systems is optional, but encouraged.
Continue as educational nonprofit with a variety of programs.
Integrate more and more as a working homestead.
1/2 acre is currently in vegetable gardens -- some additional pasture can be plowed if needed.
Limited, but enough water present from well. Water saving gardening techniques are a must, we currently use deep mulching.
Nekia silty clay loam
Barn space, shop, two greenhouses available. Vegetable processing area can be set up if needed.
50 hp tractor with tiller available for use, as well as broadfork and basic gardening tools.
Water limitations, nothing drastic.
