Backyard Gardener Work Exchange: 5 acres in Monmouth, OR

Description

Seeking Backyard Gardener, Farmer Wannabe. I’m a 63 yr old gentle man who farms 5 acres of pasture with fruit trees, sheep and chickens, more raised bed garden space than he needs. 4, 40’ x 4’; 1, 48’ x 4’; and one 12’ x 48’ with pole barn style construction. Rafters and perils are in place waiting for polycarbonate sheathing to become a greenhouse. I have multiple skills and am looking for a younger farmer or farmer wannabe. I’m a willing and able mentor with a MA in psychology and a lifetime of farming. For 20 years I farmed wine grapes and owned a small winery in the Eola Hills which i eventually sold.

I have a three bedroom, two bath 70’s farm house, a 225’ x 125’ lake with 4 acre feet of water to irrigate from (think permaculture), pastures are occupied by 8 sheep and 24 chickens, a 24 x 36 barn, and several apple, pear, plum, cherry and walnut trees. There are 12 large blueberry plants, a few gooseberries, currents, red raspberries, herbs (rosemary, parsley, sage, thyme, echinacea).

I like to can and preserve much of my own food.

As I age and my productivity slows, I could use a little help.

I’m willing to trade garden space and your help in general, for your rent. 8 hours per week. Utilities not included. Your work hours can work around your ‘other’ job. There’s one bedroom available with it’s own bathroom, a large kitchen for processing, and most all the equipment necessary.

This location in Monmouth is commutable to Salem, Corvallis and places in between. Dallas has a hospital, Monmouth has Western Oregon University (a large employer) and PCL (Partners in Community Living), Independence has a new call center, Marquis Spa. and several restaurants.
