ZENGER FARM is a 501(c)3 nonprofit working urban farm that models, promotes, and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development, and access to good food for all.

Farming operations at Zenger Farm include four acres of vegetable crops, fruit orchards and poultry. Zenger Farm is a small-scale diversified production farm growing for a 150-member CSA, restaurants and for Zenger Farm programming. The core of our farm crew consists of 3-4 farming interns mentored very closely by two experienced farm managers. Farming Interns are also an integral part of the Zenger Farm community, working at times alongside education and community engagement staff as well as leading volunteers.

 

Providing a holistic education to first-year farmers is the goal of our farming internship. This

internship is first and foremost an education of the body with many parallels to athletic coaching:

proper technique, speed, efficiency and endurance. We also strive to complement the physical

training and provide a holistic education. In addition to a practical hands-on field-based education,

farming interns receive 40 hours of classroom instruction. Farming interns rotate responsibilities to

gain experience and understanding in all aspects of managing and operating the farm. Rotating

responsibilities are comprehensive and all-inclusive. We are proud that so many of our past full-season

farming interns currently have successful farming careers. Between 2010 and 2016, 22 full-season

farming interns graduated from our program and 18 of them farmed during the 2017 growing

season

 

TIME COMMITMENT

  • March 19th – November 1, 2018
  • Regular Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 8-10 hours/day
  • “Summer Heat”: Two weeks of extended hours during the season. 50 hours, Monday-Friday.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Field Work: Most field work at Zenger Farm is done with hand tools, and includes seeding, amending, transplanting, weeding, irrigating, trellising, season extension, pest management, harvesting, hauling, washing, and processing produce for sale.
  • Machinery: Operate and maintain a weed whacker, mower, and 2-wheel tractor (BCS) with various implements.
  • Rotating responsibilities include management of the greenhouses, irrigation, poultry, field preparation and planting, harvest, processing, CSA, volunteers, and the entire farm crew toward the end of the internship.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Demonstrated experience with some gardening or farming
  • Physical ability to perform above responsibilities, lift 50 lbs, climb a ladder, operate machinery,
  • use hand tools, and all other farming activities outdoors in all conditions
  • Attitude: Positive, driven, flexible and team-oriented
  • We will perform a background check and address any issues on a case-by-case basis

 

BENEFITS

  • Stipend: $1,025/month (room and board not included). This stipend is intended as an approximation of the expenses the volunteer intern incurs during the program. The stipend is not tied to intern productivity and does not vary with the amount of time spent volunteering.
  • 1 full CSA share (June-October)
  • Caretaker housing is available for one intern (optional).Cost to the intern is $400/month and requires, in addition to the internship, 20 hours/month in caretaker duties. Caretaker housing includes a private bedroom and private bathroom in the original farmhouse where the kitchen/living space is shared with other programming at the farm (summer camps, workshops, community meetings, etc.).
