We have started an on-site vegetable and herb garden at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center and are looking to establish a strong partnership with a local farm to handle garden management. The gardening space is a total of 300 square feet and we will be growing various organic vegetable and herb varieties from starts sourced out of a local nursery. Our goal is to use the produce in our hospital kitchen and, once the garden is more established, provide education on sustainable, organic gardening to our staff, patients, and the larger community.

The job duties are as follows: Complete weekly and monthly Food Safety Plan checklists containing relevant garden tasks; oversee planting, maintaining, and harvesting vegetables and herbs (vegetable varieties have already been selected, a garden layout is made, and year-round planting and harvesting calendars have been created); and provide agricultural consultation as needed.

Time commitment: 5-20 hours per week depending on the season. This winter will be slower since we will only be growing herbs; our vegetable garden will not be planted until the spring.

Compensation: The garden manager will establish a relationship with Kaiser Permanente, may take home fresh produce for the hours spent managing the garden, and may get approval to sell their own produce in the hospital café. We are happy to discuss compensation on a case-by-case basis as this is a new project and we are unsure of what the partnership may look like.
